Biography

John E. Gnuschke received his Ph.D. (1975) from the University of Missouri, Columbia; his M.A. (1971) from the University of Missouri, Columbia; and his B.S. (1969) from Utah State University. Dr. Gnuschke has been the Director of the Center for Manpower Studies (CMS) since 1976 and since 1985, has also been the Director of the Sparks Bureau of Business and Economic Research (SBBER). He has the rank of Professor in the Department of Economics. Under Dr. Gnuschke's leadership, the SBBER and CMS rank among the top applied research divisions in the nation. He has served as the President of the national Association for Univer- sity Business and Economic Research (AUBER). Dr. Gnuschke is a widely recognized leader in his profession and is much sought after for speaking engagements, consulting, and contract research. His areas of expertise include market assessments, survey research, impact studies, revenue and cost estimates, labor market studies, and competitor analyses. He has twice been recognized by the University for his work by receiving the Superior Performance in University Research (SPUR) Award.His consulting clients include many of Memphis’ largest employers and organizations.

Research

Dr. Gnuschke is responsible for administering the SBBER/CMS' research contracts which total approxi-mately $2.5 - $4.0 million per year. These contracts involve work for, among others, the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the Tennessee Department of Human Services, the Tennessee Department of Education, the Tennessee Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, the City of Memphis, and Shelby County.

Teaching

Dr. Gnuschke has the rank of Professor and has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Economics.

Service

Dr. Gnuschke's service to the community and the University has been extensive. A few examples include: Currently Vice President of the national Land Economics Foundation; is Secretary-Treasurer of the Memphis Chapter of Lambda Alpha, a national honorary land economics society; has served as Chair of the Tennessee Board of Regents Economic Forecasting Committee; was a member of the President's Research Board of Visitors; is a member of the University of Memphis Board of Trustees; and has served as Chairman of the Fogelman College of Business Continuous Improvement Committee, Intellectual Contributions Committee, and AACSB Task Force; and has served on the Fogelman College of Business and Economics Executive Committee.

Dr. Gnuschke is a member of the Association of Business and Economic Research, the Travel and Tourism Research Association, the National Association of Business Economists, the Southern Growth Policies Board, the Conference Board, the American Association of University Professors, the Southwestern Economics Association and Southeastern Employment and Training Association, to name a few.
